I am pretty sure my original kernel had cifs built into the kernel. I also
have samba installed
in the machine.

I thought I could give a newer kernel source a try with cifs built as a kernel
module. However,
modprobe doesn't seem to see it. Perhaps it is already loaded by default?

This is the error message that I get when I do not specify a password.

~ # mount -t cifs //192.168.1.101/temp /mnt/arieltmp/ -o user=transfer
Password:
mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

Thanks for the advice.
