I find it useful to use procmail to sort out my email for me, even though it is pretty much only me using this machine. I like trying out different mail programs from time to time, so I just set up a imap server on my machine, and I can get my mail in any mail program that supports imap. I've been using kmail for a while, but I switch to others now and then to see how they compare. If I try new things I'll still be able to get my mail sorted into various folders without dealing with every single program's filtering tools. This setup is also useful for getting at my mail from other places; pretty much everyone has a email client capable of connecting to an imap server...
