thanks so much for helping me out here, i just have a few questions first.  
keep in mind that most of my linux experience is in server-type stuff -- 
desktop and media-related software is not my area of understanding let alone 
expertise:

well at the moment, i'd just be thrilled to be able to get something through 
xawtv... or even having /dev/v4l exist would be a start.  i will definately 
check out mythtv when i'm up and running though -- i've heard great things.

ok.  slow down there ;-)  what IS all that?
i found bt848 in "sound"
v4l was under "multimedia devices"
but i didn't see bt848 for video anywhere
i found I20 and I20-PCI
found I2C as well but didn't see anything to select from the sub-list that 
appeared when i selected "bit-banging" (whatever that is).

...so what is all that?  and how do i "use local.start with insmod..."
