...and this is where i get lost. i've been unable to find any usefull howtos
on this subject. i end up working with instructions much like the above,
suggesting that i "use" km and install drm but the downloaded tarballs offer
me nothing helpful in terms of how... the drm-kernel tarbal for instance
doesn't even have a configure scirpt.... just a makefile... what do i do
with it? the README is completely useless and suggests that for more
information you go to "precisioninsight.com" -- the site no longer exists.

"dri.sourceforge.net" is equally useless, as it tells me to download their own
package of dri stuff and "just run their script"... the same script the
mangled my X install last time, forcing me to re-install my system.

with my previous experience in mind, i'm less than inclined to experiment with
whatever "km" is without knowing exactly what's going on especially when the
README for that tarball includes only "hints" for installation:

    * edit Makefile
    * compile
    * become root and issue "make test"
    * start X
    * get AVview, compile it
    * run AVview
    * enjoy
    * tweak

i would think that unless you built the stuff, you won't have any idea what
"tweak" means. what are normal desktop users supposed to do with this sort
of thing? i hate having to go back to windows just to record some tv, but
this isn't giving me any other option.

does anyone on this list have suggestions as to what other video-capture cards
are out there that support linux more responsibly?

thanks.
