Mark,
  You solution worked.  I guess I just assumed it would be using the
uname information rather than the symlink.  I usually don't move over
the link until I'm sure the kernel is fully operational :).

I had the same problem a while ago. I had to adjust the /usr/src/linux
symlink 
before reinstalling nvidia-kernel and then everything worked fine.
