  What sort of mouse is it exactly ? 
 
 Try the "Device" setting as "/dev/usbmouse" rather than /dev/mouse or 
whatever. I find that works a lot better. 

 Also, if you have gpm running, try killing that before you run X, and see if 
it makes a difference. I personally don't use the mouse on console, so I don't 
use gpm, but have heard of a few problems like this in the past.

 If you have a Microsoft Intellimouse etc, then you should use "Protocol" as 
"ExplorerPS/2" and *nothing else*.
