For my old notebook, I was forced to use Knoppix as a boot CD for my
Gentoo installation. Knoppix has an excellent hardware detection, you
could try to use it as a basis for your installation (but of course,
YMMV).

Your XP is merely protecting itself. :-) Partition Magic 5 might really
screw up your system. Try using the current version 8, it works
perfectly on XP (IIRC, version 7 and everything before will *not* work).
