Forget it. Knoppix has no better chance to run on that IEEE1394 CD drive than any other Linux boot CD. You'll end up with a floppy based install, and Slackware 8.1 seems to be the flavour of the month. Check this thread in the forums for details: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=27951 (and make sure you read to the end of it, there's a reason why we don't use tomsrtbt anymore). I haven't finished my own installation guide for the R505 yet, sorry, but I can send you my kernel .config and XF86Config files if you want. Meanwhile, here are the existing howtos for your model (or at least very similar models): http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/samr7/upl/ http://www.james.rcpt.to/2001/vaio505ct.html http://vorlon.cwru.edu/~ames/r505gl/ http://www.geocities.com/torus2000/linux_on_PCG-R505GL.html http://returntonature.com/linux/phpwiki/index.php/PCG-R505TS And this is the mother of all Linux-Sony resources: http://returntonature.com/pipermail/linux-sony, the mailing list archive for Vaio owners with a predilection for open source operating systems... > > The next problem is that Windows XP doesn't let me install Partition > > Magic 5. PM v7 was the first version that could safely modify NTFS partitions, so it's safe to use that (well, I did...), but if you have to upgrade from your version 5 anyway, you might as well go for 8.
