[gentoo-user] parallel emerges

Is it safe to run to separate emerge's if they have nothing in common? Or even if they do have something in common? For instance, would I be able to run 'emerge -u world' on one terminal, and run 'emerge whatever' on another terminal where the second one requires something that would be updated later on in the 'emerge -u world'?
