Just out of interest, are there any performance reasons to switch to the
new X? I'm running fine with whatever is in stable right now, and I'm
just wondering if I'll see any big improvement (or increase rather,
speed is fine now) in X4.3?

I can say that it doesn't feel particularly faster, however - RandR will be one of those "FINALLY!" features once all the major DM's/WM's support it nicely. There are other features that have made their way in which will be useful down the road as software support fills in.
In other words, unless you have a video card whose support has improved (see the release notes) I wouldn't say you must upgrade now, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to fire it off in the background so you'll have it when you do need it (then again, it may be heavily patched by then!).
