i got the same problem, i emerged gentoosources 2.4.20, booted it up (some trouble with modules, but nothing that had with nvidia to do) and then tried to emerge the 4*** nvidia driver, didnt work it gave me unrresolved symbols and X didnt start, tried with the 3*** same problem, booted up 2.4.19 and remerge 4***, and now it works
