Subject: [gentoo-user] Linux as a print server for macs

I have a printer connected to my parallel port and cups installed. It's easy
to set this printer for my linux laptop to use.

Anyone know do I make it available to someone running mac v. 9.x?

Regarding Macs and printer sharing:

1. CUPS is sufficient for OS10.2 clients which have CUPS browsing built-in. You'll need to configure the CUPS server to allow clients on the network to browse and print.

2. The Samba method will require an SMB/CIFS client( e.g. DAVE* by Thursby Software ) for any MacOS 8.6+( including 10.x ). Correctly configuring Samba printer sharing can be a real pain though.
*Disclaimer: I am employed by Thursby Software. www.thursby.com.

3. You could also look at the AppleTalk tools for Linux to emulate an AppleTalk server( it's called 'netatalk' I believe ). This solution would be the least expensive financially, and likely the most compatible with OS9 but I don't know anything about how to set it up, or if it really works :)

I don't think any CUPS printer browser for OS9 exists, but I may have missed it.

An additional caveat for MacOS9 is that the printer will have to be LaserWriter compatible to be able to print to it from across a network. Most postscript printers fall into this category. You should check with the manufacturer.
