My last Gentoo Linux install (rc2) took me less than 45 minutes.

I went with a stage-3 tarball, emerge sync and scp'ed a working kernel from
another gentoo box which had everything I needed for my new box built into the
kernel instead of modules. emerge cron & system loggers and raid tools lvm user
xfsprogs and addpatches. Super basic linux system with nothing on it other than
what is needed to have a running working Gentoo System.

I'm assuming all you need is a jdk for your java development, so just reboot
and

emerge JDKOFCHOICE

which should get you off and running.

It shouldnt take you more than 90 minutes to have a running and working
Gentoo Linux http server with needed mods if you do it as mentioned above
(by using appropriate USE '-' flags for your initial emerge PACKAGE builds).
And it shouldnt take you more than 45 minutes to have a running gentoo linux
box if you use stage3 and the GRP packages included on the LiveCD.

The install was on an E-Machines (Celeron) 466i :)... the best $50 I ever
spent!
