Be aware that Evolution will probably drag in a lot of gnome.  A simpler and reliable 
email product is sylpheed.

Fluxbox or Openbox would be a fine choice.  I like xfce, but unfortunately you have to 
tinker with the ebuild to avoid installing gnome (I've reported this in bugzilla a 
long time ago).
