I don't care wether you like kde or not. But it IS portable! Its running on all various Linux's, on a lot of Unix's, parts are running under qtopia and some people have it working under win. Yes, kde is huge. But it isn't simply a wm for a server to open three xterms parallel. Its far more. I wouldn't start kde if I need something fast and tiny either.
