I have an Epson Stylus Color 670 connected via a parallel port, administered with
CUPS. Works like a charm. Epson - for Linux-friendly printing and scanning.

Hmmm... could be a permissions problem. With which user does:
# cat test.txt > /dev/lp0
work?
Printing a test page comes under the root location since it is not considered an
"admin" task. What are your restrictions like?
