I'm not sure what versions of the programs you are using but I just
went through the same thing.

It's been my experience that you need to re-emerge ghostscript after
emerging gimp-print-cups and it seems there is a conflict when you
try to emerge ghostscript after emerging gimp-print-cups-4.3.8 or
higher

what worked for me was to unmerge cups, ghostscript and
gimp-print-cups then emerge cups, ghostscript, gimp-print-cups-4.3.5
(an older version) and then re-emerge ghostscript.

Then use a browser to add the printer via http://127.0.0.1:631.

That's what worked for me.
