I can't help you with slow frame rates, but the error is a simple X setup problem, and 
this problem gets answered a few times a week on all lists.  The X server when started 
does not allow any user other than the one you started it with (including root) to 
access the display.  To permit another user (including root) to access the display, 
from your normal user issue the command `xauth +localhost`.  After doing that, root 
can access the display.  When finished, you may want to issue `xauth -` from your 
normal user as a security precaution.
