Try doing "emerge -s xfree" 
you will get:

noticed  x11-base/xfree-drm [ Masked ]

The package is masked to protect you from yourself. Read up on masked 
packages. You can edit /etc/make.conf to accept masked pkgs if you're 
brave but Gerald's suggestion is better  ie only accepting packages on 
an individual basis.
