Did you set up /etc/conf.d/net and then do the rc-update. The docs show how to do it.

Hi Gentoo users
I've just installed Gentoo 1.4_rc3, and had no problems during install.
My network card was found and set up automatically (my ISP uses
dhcp...). My ISP also requires me to log in via a homepage that is
locally available, before I gain access "out of the house" to the
internet. I signed on using Lynx, and it all worked fine.
But when the installation was done, and I did a reboot, the network card
was not found. /sbin/ifconfig only shows lo, there's no eth0 anymore.
How is this possible? And how can I set up my NIC again, manually?
Second, this is the first time I've tried to compile my own kernel. The
things that I choose support for, are those the only things that will
work on my computer. If I choose not to have any functions from the
CryptoAPI, that doesn't mean that I won't be able to use cryptographi,
does it??? I would expect that ssh works just the same, whether I've
included any CryptoAPI options in my kernel or not - is that correct? Is
there anyone who could point me to a guide on this subject?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards
Jacob Melgaard
