I am rather curious though why gentoo takes so long to compile and setup
verses some of the other distros? Is it simply that we get to compile our
custom kernel and the others just give you a kernel compiled the way they
want, or is there more to it than that?



Most other distros you do not compile from source. The extra time it takes to compile is a trade off for the increase in performance. Compiling the kernel is a relatively quick job compared to many other packages in Gentoo.
