The first thing to do is get your email process to filter the lists into
separate folders.  Then you can more easily skim them for relevance.  Kmail
and Outhouse (Outlook) do this easily, as to most gui mail programs.

Yes, they build up if you let them.  I'm on several lists, too, and
sometimes winnowing the wheat (for me) from the chaff (for me) is a long
process.  After a four day weekend I had over 300 messages in this list
alone, and over 600 total.  You learn to be *very* fast with the delete
button.

Alternatively, some lists allow you to set "no-mail".  You can then peruse
the list via the archives, and only look for threads of interest to you.
You can still reply and submit questions, though, because you are a member
of the list.  I do this with a list that isn't time critical and that I may
have time to look at or not.

Finally, you can set the list usage to digest and get a lot fewer messages,
but they will require more reading to determine if anything in the message
is relevant to you.
