Hi everyone,

When I first installed Gentoo about 3 months ago I was impressed with it's
speed running on my Pentium III 500 MHz computer. Now I find myself
sometimes tapping the desk with my fingers so to speak waiting for certain
things to happen.

Lately the swap file is getting used more and more even though I have 512 RAM
and even though a majority of the used RAM is being used as a cache for my
programs based on what the KDE System Guard monitor shows me.

Back when I first installed Gentoo and was using just as many programs as I am
now I was very impressed with the fact that the swap file was NEVER used.

All in all my Gentoo system seems to be getting slower and slower. Can anyone
suggest things I can do to 1) speed it up again and 2) reduce or eliminate
the use of the swap file (I know it's possible because for a long time I ran
without the swap file EVER being used at all - and I paid attention to it
quite a bit).

Short of reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling Gentoo that is :) I
understand that under Linux there is no such thing as a defragmenting program
(at least not yet).

Any suggestions would be most appreciated. The use of the swap file is one of
those things that especially bugs me since I got the high RAM to prevent it's
use altogether. For example I am running KMail and the KDE System Guard
(along with KDE of course) and that's it for programs! Other than the usual
background processes. And my computer is using 462 KB's of RAM with 53 KB
free while using 20 KB of my swap file. It NEVER used to run as slowly as it
does now and it NEVER used to use any of the swap file.

Thanks.
