I have tried rebooting the computer immediately after a crash and looked at the cpu temp it was 37c and the system temp was at 40c so I do not think that heat is the culprit another idea was power supply but I don't know it is an Antec 350w power supply and is pushing Ti4200 XP2100 512mb DDR 2 HDD CDROM and CDRW I did the math on power consumption for all of my components and found that 350w should still be able to push it.
As far as cpu cooler I am using coolermaster hhc-001 you can see details here http://www.coolermaster.com.hk/product_detail.asp?lang=eng&at=boutique&categ ory_id=1&product_id=11 -----Original Message----- From: Ernie Schroder [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 9:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Confused On Friday 27 June 2003 09:17 am, Tracy LCpl Derek E wrote: > That is what I thought also (optimizations) but I turned all of them > off and still had the same thing happen just in a different place. Derek, There is another possibility here. The problem may be heat related. Athlon XP's tend to run very hot and if they get much above 165 F, all kinds of crashes are apt to occurr. I would advise you to try the install again and when it crashes, immediately reset the box and enter BIOS to check the processor temp. Different people will tell you different things but I find 145 -150 degrees the high end for stability. (windows seems to be affected at lower temps). My XP 2100 runs at 110 F under heavy load and idles at 102 with a cheapie cooler My girl friend's XP1800 (running WinXP) idles at 145 with a top of the line 45$ cooler. Both boxes have 2 case fans, 2hdd's and 2 CDROM drives. I blame it on the case design. I'm about to cut some more holes for fans in her box. At any rate, I would suggest you try popping the covers and setting a window fan near the open case to cool it down as much as possible. Good luck. -- Regards, Ernie 100% Microsoft and Intel free -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
