Well, it's not exactly parallel, Collin. In the Stampede case Dan had
support and direction from management in what he was to do but there were
some lower level developers that were trying to mold his work into their
image, despite the fact his mission statement was otherwise. The mangers
chose not to address this issue so Dan left rather than put up with the
hassle. A closer parallel might be the issue with the Sorcemage and lunar
spilt someone else mentioned.

Well, not everyone in the world can be in on the decision making - it's
impossible to put even just all the developers in a decision making postion -
even the Gentoo spinoff won't do that since he's forming a group to lead it.
Sometimes a project doesn't go in the direction we want or feel it should -
that's life. The leaders of the project are following a path as they see
meeting the visions of the project. If it gets to bad there is the option to
leave and start one's own venture as this guy did. However, what raises a
big red flag to me is the announcement was not just "Hey, I'm interested in
embedded Linux systems and want to put Gentoo in them so I'm starting a fork
- see www.blahblah.url for details. Anyone interested let me know." Instead
he had to include a long explanation of the gory details which makes me as -
is he really just interested in embedded Gentoo or what axe is he grinding?
As I said - a simple "I'm starting a fork" would have sufficed. Yes, we may
leave a project with hurt feelings - that's normal when we invest a lot in
something but we don't need to cause ill feelings.
