Another top-poster!

That sounds like a lot of work to me.  I stopped KDE from displaying 
drive icons on the desktop.  I wanted floppy and DVD icons though, but 
all you have to do is right-click on the desktop -> Create New -> 
Floppy Device, etc. and Bob's your uncle.
