if your connection is "sketchy" i'd suggest doing the following:
# emerge --fetchonly system
befor you run the "emerge system" step. this will calculate what needs to be
downloaded, and download everything at once. then you can do the install and
not have to worry about your connection. as long as you're online for the
time you're downloading, you should be fine. if the connection gets lost,
just delete the last package downloaded re-run the command.
