Some general build-tips for cases such as this is to make sure you
reduce MAKEOPTS to -j1, preferrably stash in a distccd there somewhere, 
and don't go the way of CFLAGS=-O3 (really. ) 

as for distfiles on a small disk, I setup a small on-demand mirror
system for sources locally, which may or may not be what you want :)
