Why are the number of connections allowed so low and why does it terminate connections prematurely with Microsoft email clients? Or are these errors indicative of some bigger issue?

They are low, because there is no reason why a client should need more than 1 connection per account. But they do, heh.

I'd appreciate help on how to better configure courier-imap. Cyrus, my previous imap server, worked fine and I would like courier-imap to work properly now that I've made the move.

Cyrus probably had a larger connections-per-IP defautl setting.

You can change it in courier by editing imapd (or pop3d, or indeed imapd-ssl etc), and increasing the variable 'MAXPERIP'.

There is little security risk in setting this to a reasonably high value, I use 64.
