The question is: What are those new ('N') packages? Why might I need iputils
New packages sometimes arrive when developers add new dependencies to existing packages or modify virtual packages which can be seen in /var/cache/edb/virtuals.
And I'd be very grateful if some one could point out what packages depend on that 'N's?
To find out which packages depend on a particular package do the following.
emerge gentoolkit etcat -d package
Etcat is my favourite in preference to qpkg.
May be its because some new USE-flags in make.globals?
Yes. Do a sync, emerge ufed and reselect your use flags. Do not edit make.globals.
a) I have libxml2 installed and I wonder why might I need 'libxml'? Even 'libxml2' docs recommend get rid of first version of library.
Check whether you have both xml and xml2 use flags enabled. If so, remove xml.
b) I don't use gnome! I don't need 'libglade'!
A surprising amount of packages in Linux depend on gtk and qt and they in turn depend on gnome and kde. A tragic scenario I know but not one that can be helped.
c) Gosh, I even don't know what is 'flac', 'libfame' and 'id3lib'!
They are dependencies maybe?
WTF is going on? :-)
I believe you are undergoing a learning process just like the rest of us.
Cheers.
