OK, problem solved :)

I had the wrong permissions for /var/lib/sasl2. root was (and is) the 
owner of this dir, and it was only readable by root himself, no 
others. After changing the permissions a+rx to this dir, everything 
works now.

Question: Is this normal? What is the "official" way to solve this 
issue? Is it ok, if this directory is readable by everyone?
