Well, I compiled the kernel like you said by grabbing the /proc/config settings while booting from the CD. I compiled that kernel, but the network still fails to start. :-( Next I am removing anything that I believe is not required to boot, and see if that works. If not, then I don't see any other choice but to abandon Gentoo on this system.
