In this case perhaps using the good old "dialog" tool might be an alternative to writing a complete curses UI? For KDE there exists a complementary tool "kdialog", perhaps this could be converted into a Qt-only version - so you could use it in the same way as the "dialog" tool. Then only a gtk-based version would be needed to make everybody happy.
