Are you running gpm as well as X.  If so, I would check your X 
configuration.  Make sure X is using '/dev/gpmdata' as the device.  Also, 
make sure gpm is set up properly as a repeater.

If X tries to read from the same device as gpm (i.e. /dev/psaux), the cursor 
will go crazy or do what you are describing.
