I doubt that you'll have much luck with some of these folks. I browsed
through the thread, and most of the negative comments seem to come from
the "I know what I think, please don't confuse me with the facts" folks,
or the "I tried it once a long time ago, and I didn't like it then"
folks, or "the "I want the quickest possible install" folks.
On my local users' group and another user group that I've belonged to
for many years, I've only seen a handful of people actually experiment
with gentoo.
Whenever I read one of the sequences of RPM hell or dependancy hell, I
always remind them that there is a permanent solution. In one out of
ten cases, I get a positive response.
Interestingly enough, it frequently gets down to the supposed
performance benefits of gentoo which are basically unimportant to me. I
need a system that performs reasonably well and one which I can easily
upgrade (i.e. someone else has checked out the dependancies) with
packages that have been through some level of quality control.
I'm surprised that no one brought up the other red hering - gentoo is
not 100% LSB compliant. So what is my opinion.
