Hi Michael,

maybe your DMA mode is not activated? You can check and activate it using the "hdparm" command (check the man-page about the command, I don't know the details at the moment). I had a similar problem in the past. The chipset I used was supported, but not in DMA mode. So I had the slowest PIO mode.

Hi,

whenever I cause a lot of IDE traffic(copying a large file from cd to
disk, write a cd or copying a large file into another directory) my
system becomes awfully slow. I cannot even play mp3's or move the
mouse pointer without interruption. Also the drawing of a new window
is very very slow. I am using a P4 with 2.4GHz and 1GB RAM(Kernel 2.4.20(vanilla)) and that's why I think it
can't be the CPU. When I watch over the running processes using top I
regognize that X is taking a lot of cpu usage. The kernel already
supports the chipset I use.
What kan I do to increase performance?(even on my old K6-400Mhz
everything worked fine)

Thank you in advance.

Michael
