What this is telling you is that you've set up your X server to load the drivers for a certain type of display, and that it's not finding that type of display. Do you have one of the Matrox models listed? My guess is you ran xf86config and didn't give the right answers for your hardware. It's not very user-friendly, unfortunately, but most Linux distros (except Mandrake, that I know of) aren't very good at helping you figure out X configuration.
