Thank you for the replies! I have followed the instructions here, but I haven't had any luck. I do have the frame buffer images working, but it won't work in silent mode. My syslog reads
bootsplash: silent mode. I executed sbin/splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/default/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg > /boot/initrd-1024x768 and changed my grub.conf file to use it and set splash=silent. And yes, /boot is mounted ;-).
