The latter part of this reply is partially true...but you will run into problems with Grub later on in the install if you don't probably propagate /dev with the RAID device nodes. Installing Gentoo on a hardware RAID controller requires some special steps that are in the install guide (but in the wrong spot). Scroll all the way down to the bottom and review the instructions for installing on "Hardware ATA RAID", particularly the chroot part.
