E.g: > nice -19 setiathome I've tried this and it was to no avail. I think it also has something to do with memory. But what you do, is when you kill you setiathome, you do a kill -s SIGSTOP 'pid'. then you can do a kill -s SICONT 'pid' when your finished with openoffice.
