Mark, I already have alsa installed, with no problems that I'm aware of (I followed only the instructions of the gentoo alsa-guide). But I understood that alsa provides sound drivers, in substitution of the more standard OSS drivers, whereas aRts manages access to the sound hardware (something that apparently is not appreciated by many non-KDE applications). I don't know whether alsa can be viewed as an alternative to aRts, or whether an alternative is needed; my contact with these matters is very recent.
