I read a white paper on the subject a while back, may 4 months or so. 
Basically it proves that EXT2 is the fastest of all the non-journalling 
filesystems on linux. As for the best journalling performer, it was
EXT3. The 
differences of all the journalling filesystems were measurable, but not
so 
different that any one single filesystem was useless. The slowest of the

bunch, on average,  was XFS.

Give me a while... I'll try and track donw that paper for you.

Thank you, Those results seem quite surprising to me, I would have said
the order of performance would be:
  - XFS
  - ReiserFS
  - ext2
  - ext3

With JFS sitting some were in the list, it will be interesting to see
how performance was tested.
