I'm not sure about how daemontools was used previous in Gentoo (and
right now I'm too lazy to look in the archives) but have you considered
looking at runit ?

http://smarden.org/runit/index.html

Which is a daemontools like replacement for sysvinit ?

I've never used it in production but I have testing it a bit. It did
seem to work very well for the limit testing I did to it.
