Not sure how to do it in KMail, but there definitely should be some way to view the full message header. In case you were curious, the headers that you would be interested to look at are 'References:' and 'In-Reply-To'. That last one is the killer ;). That get's set when you hit the 'Reply' button. Most mailers (well, I know mutt does) organize threads first via these headers, and secondarily off of the subject line (mutt tags those as pseudo threads).
