Emerge smartmontools.  (For Self Monitoring, Analysis, Reporting Tool).
This supplies smartctl (for direct usage) and smartd (for background
monitoring).  Probably any Linux on CD distro will include it.  I highly
recommend that everyone use this program.

As a side note, the man page was clearly written for Redhat.
