Just curious.  Have you tried 2.6.0_beta6 (development-sources)?  I've noticed
no sluggishness on my desktop under heavy load (multiple emerges and the usual
browsaer, email, and OpenOffice desktop activity).  Of course, I'm
probably not the best reference.  I haven't had a single kernel failure in 5+
years using linux.
