The configuration tools provided by XFree86 are generally enough to get the job done (X -configure, xf86cfg -textmode, and xf86config are three primary methods). Why don't you copy the complete XF86Config over instead of trying to just get relevant sections, and probably missing something small but important? Many of us have laptops with 1400x1050 resolutions that work quite well. I believe I used xf86cfg to generate my XF86Config, although it's been a while. http://www.sh.nu/nvidia/ provides some information on generating custom modelines, if you care to try a different method.
