are you sure with hde (the letter E) ?
this whould be your fifth IDE-Drive, have you got a raid-adapter or something?
if you have a hde, can it be, that grub use hd0 for this drive?

I don't know exactly, but if you want to load a kernel with grub, you have to 
give hin the right command:


grub> kernel /boot/kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r7
I think you have to perform a the command root before you load the kernel
And then you can try boot
but i'm not sure
