The first thing to do is look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log. Either cat 
the wole thing or do:
cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log | grep "(EE)"
The latter will just print out the errors to the screen.
This should give you enough info to fix it. If not, post that output 
back here.
