I'm guessing the OP uses a regular ISP like most people. I'm pretty sure we can't get them to switch to IMAP for e-mail... :-) Yes, I understand that it's possible to setup a personal IMAP server that fetches your mail from your ISP and then access it via IMAP, but that's more work than many people want to get into.
Figuring out which MTA's will read each other's files cross-platform and behave correctly without damaging, losing or corrupting the mail seems like a similar amount of work to me. :-) More, actually.
Just offering choices. Fetchmail setup is about as simple as simple gets and the OP may not have been aware of that option.
